David Benken

Technical Director
David Benken has been responsible for some of the most astonishing behind-the-scenes technical achievements on Broadway. From Pride Rock in The Lion King to an underwater world in The Little Mermaid, from dancing upside down on the proscenium arch in Mary Poppins to a flying car in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, audiences around the world have been in awe of his technical feats.

A Cincinnati native, David discovered his love for technical theater while attending high school. For a brief time, he worked as a programmer for Hewlett Packard, but quickly found his way back to the stage. “You are always learning something new as technology keeps evolving,” David says. “We know today’s tech-savvy audiences expect to see certain sophistication on stage.” That technical sophistication is always on display with David at the helm.

Having worked on a vast array of original productions such as: Misery, Aladdin, Motown the Musical, Annie, One Man, Two Guvnors, Peter and the Starcatchers, Magic/Bird, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and with over three decades of experience mounting productions on Broadway, Las Vegas and across the globe, David now lends his expertise in stagecraft and technical supervision to INVENT as a contributor to the curriculum.
